Writing a birthday poem

A birthday poem has one job: to make the person feel seen. That is why the generic ones fail. "Another year older, another year wise" could be about anyone, and the reader knows it. The fix is not better rhyming, it is one specific detail only you would know.

Three things that make it work

1

Name one real thing

Their terrible parking, the way they answer the phone, the fact they have made the same soup for nine years. One concrete detail does more work than four lines of praise.

2

Match the register to the person

A poem for a close friend can be rude. A poem for your mother probably should not be. Pick the tone before you pick the form, because it decides everything else.

3

Short is a gift

Four lines in a card beats sixteen lines nobody finishes. If you are reading it aloud you have more room, but even then, stop while people still want more.

What to avoid

Counting their age in the poem, unless the joke is genuinely good. Most people have heard every over-the-hill line already.

An example

You still take the corner too fast, still call at the worst hour to ask nothing much. Forty years of this. I would not change a single one.
