What is a acrostic?
An acrostic hides a word down the left margin. The trick is that the poem has to work as a poem first, so nobody notices the constraint until they read downward.
The rules, exactly
- The first letter of each line spells the supplied keyword vertically, reading downward.
- One line per letter.
- The poem must read naturally as a poem; the hidden word should not distort the sense.
- If no keyword is supplied, use the poem's main subject.
Where it comes from
Acrostics appear in Hebrew scripture, where several psalms run through the alphabet, and were popular with Renaissance poets who hid patrons' names in dedications.
