Writing a love letter poem
The problem with love poems is that everything obvious has been said perfectly by someone else already. You cannot out-write Shakespeare on eyes and summer days. What you can do, which he could not, is write about this person.
Three things that make it work
Be embarrassingly specific
Not their beauty. The particular way they say your name when they are annoyed. Specificity is the only thing separating a love poem from a greeting card.
Admit something
A love poem with nothing at risk in it reads as decoration. Say the thing that is slightly difficult to say and the whole poem gains weight.
Sensory beats abstract
What you can hear, smell and touch, rather than what you feel. The feeling reaches the reader through the details, not through being named.
What to avoid
Souls, destiny, and hearts doing anything at all. If a line could be printed on a mug, cut it.
