What is a ode?
An ode looks hard at one thing and refuses to look away. Praise is the mode, but the good ones earn it by noticing detail nobody else bothered with.
The rules, exactly
- A sustained address to a single subject, praising it directly.
- Use second person where natural.
- Elevated but not archaic diction.
- Build through stanzas of consistent length, deepening the attention rather than repeating it.
Where it comes from
Pindar wrote them for victorious athletes; Horace made them private and conversational. Keats fused both in 1819, and Neruda later proved the form works just as well aimed at a tomato or a pair of socks.
