Writing a anniversary poem
An anniversary is about accumulation. What makes these poems work is time: the same kitchen, ten years apart, and everything that has changed in between. A poem that only describes the present moment misses what is actually being celebrated.
Three things that make it work
Use two points in time
Then and now, side by side. The poem writes itself in the gap between them. It is the simplest structure available and the most reliable.
Include the unglamorous years
The house move, the bad job, the year someone was ill. Acknowledging the hard parts is what makes the affectionate parts believable.
Let small things carry the weight
Whose turn it is to make tea. The side of the bed each of you takes. Long relationships are built from these, not from declarations.
What to avoid
Counting the years in every stanza. Say the number once, if at all, and spend the rest of the poem earning it.
