What is a couplet?
Two lines, one rhyme, one thought. The couplet is the smallest unit of English verse that feels finished, which is why it closes sonnets and why proverbs so often arrive in pairs.

- Pairs of rhyming lines of equal length.
- Each couplet should be a complete thought that could stand alone.
- Aim for the closed couplet: the sense finishes with the rhyme, which gives each pair the finality of an epigram.

Where it comes from
Chaucer used couplets in the Canterbury Tales. Dryden and Pope perfected the closed heroic couplet in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, making it the dominant form of English satire.
