Writing a funeral poem
Writing about someone you have lost is hard in a particular way: the feeling is enormous and the words available are small and worn out. The instinct is to reach for big language. Almost always, the plainer version lands harder.

A poem that states the loss quietly and then stops will move a room further than one that keeps insisting on how much it hurts. Trust the silence after the last line.
One memory, held steady
Not a list of their qualities. One thing they did, described exactly. The way they held a cup, what they said when you got something wrong. Specificity is what makes a person recognisable.
Plan for your own voice breaking
Keep the lines short and the sentences simple, so you can find your place again if you have to stop. Have someone ready to take over.
What to avoid
Angels, better places, and anything that tells mourners how to feel. Say what was true about the person and let the room feel what it feels.
