What is a blank verse?

Blank verse is iambic pentameter without rhyme. It is the closest English metrical form to natural speech, which is why nearly all of Shakespeare's dialogue is written in it.

The rules, exactly

  • Unrhymed iambic pentameter: ten syllables per line, alternating unstressed and stressed.
  • Use enjambment freely so sentences run across line endings.
  • The meter should feel like speech, not like counting.

Where it comes from

Introduced to English by the Earl of Surrey in the 1540s for his translation of the Aeneid, then taken up by Marlowe and Shakespeare for the stage and by Milton for epic.

To be, or not to be, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer.
William Shakespeare, Hamlet
