Writing a new baby poem
New baby poems are usually written to a person who cannot read, to be kept and read much later. That double audience is what makes the form interesting: it is a letter into the future.
Three things that make it work
Decide the reader
The exhausted parents now, or the child at eighteen. Both are good choices. Trying to do both at once is what makes these poems vague.
Fix the moment in time
What the weather was doing. What was on the news. It costs one line and makes the poem a record rather than a sentiment.
You may mention the exhaustion
New parents are usually relieved when someone acknowledges how hard it is, rather than describing it as pure joy.
What to avoid
Bundles of joy and little miracles. The parents are hearing both roughly forty times a day.
An example
You arrived on the wettest Tuesday in years. The hospital car park flooded to the axles. Your father, who does not cry, cried in a Vauxhall. We are keeping this to tell you later.
