Writing a graduation poem

Where they started. What they were like at the beginning. The distance is the achievement, and it is more interesting than the future, which nobody knows.
Resist the advice
One line of it, at most, and only if it is genuinely yours. Reach for the stars is not advice, it is filler.
Name the hard part
The year they nearly quit. The subject that beat them. Acknowledging it makes the celebration real rather than automatic.
What to avoid
Doors opening, chapters closing, and the world being their oyster. All three arrive in every card they will receive.
