Writing a get well poem
Get well poems live on a narrow ledge. Too light and you seem not to have grasped it; too heavy and you have written a sympathy card to someone with a broken ankle. Matching the weight of the actual situation is most of the job.
Three things that make it work
Keep it short
Someone ill in bed or in hospital does not want a long read. Four lines is generous.
Point at normal life
The thing waiting for them when they are up. A specific one. It gives the poem somewhere to go besides the illness.
Skip the medical detail
They are living inside it. The poem is a break from it, not a summary.
What to avoid
Fighting and battling, unless you know they use that language themselves. Plenty of people find it exhausting.
An example
The chair by the window is holding your shape. The kettle has been strange since you left. Nobody here can work the good radio. Take the time you need. Then come and fix it.
