Writing a friendship poem
Friendship is the relationship we have the fewest set phrases for, which makes it the easiest to write about honestly and the easiest to get wrong by borrowing the language of love poems.
Three things that make it work
Use the shared joke
Every real friendship has one. Putting it in the poem makes it unmistakably theirs, even if nobody else in the room understands it.
Ordinary beats momentous
Not the holiday. The eight hundred unremarkable coffees. Friendship is made of repetition, and saying so is more moving than picking a highlight.
Affection can be rude
Between close friends, an insult is often the warmest available register. Use the voice you actually use with them.
What to avoid
Through thick and thin, always there for me. True of everyone, therefore about no one.
An example
Nineteen years and you still order for me wrong, on purpose, watching for the face. I have never once corrected it. This is, I am told, what people mean by love.
