Writing a christmas poem
Christmas has more worn-out imagery attached to it than any other occasion in English. Snow, bells, firelight, a robin. Avoiding all of it is what separates a Christmas poem someone keeps from one that goes in the recycling in January.

Weather is a trap
Most people spending Christmas in English do not have snow. Damp and dark is more honest and, oddly, more atmospheric.
Leave room for the empty chair
For many people Christmas is when a loss is loudest. One acknowledging line makes a poem land for far more readers.
What to avoid
Sleigh bells, chestnuts and anything else borrowed from an American song. It reads as decoration rather than writing.
