What is a epic?

An epic is a long narrative poem about someone whose choices matter to more than themselves. The scale is the point: the form assumes a hero, a nation, and a fate large enough to need a few thousand lines.

The rules, exactly

  • A heroic narrative in elevated style.
  • Open in the middle of the action.
  • Establish a hero, a stake worth the length, and an opposing force.
  • Use extended similes and formal epithets.
  • Maintain consistent stanza length and a steady, weighty rhythm throughout.

Where it comes from

The oldest surviving one is Gilgamesh. Homer set the conventions still in use, Virgil made them deliberate, and Milton proved in Paradise Lost that English could carry the weight.

Of Man's first disobedience, and the fruit Of that forbidden tree.
John Milton, Paradise Lost
